The Lincolnarchives Digital Project update

Welcome to the Lincolnarchives Digital Project update. With over 6000 documents currently online now, we are now in the process of digitizing the Halleck Papers. Today we located a new Lincoln which is not noted in the Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln.

On July 12, 1863, shortly after the battle of Gettysburg, Meade slowly progresses closer to the defeated Lee, as he attempts to get over the Potomac. A telegram is sent from the telegraph operator at Sandy Hook to Thomas Eckert providing current information. On the back of the telegram we found an urgent question from Lincoln.

Citizens here give it as their opinion from the stage of water at this point that the River is now fordable at Sheperdstown & Williamsport. It has fallen here 5 or 6 feet from highest water mark of last rise.
Heavy firing heard this P.M. direction Hagerstown 4 p.m. can't hear it from off orderlies were up on heights.
Operator.
"If the within be true, as to stage of water, will then be any poart of the enemy North of the river tomorrow morning?

The Lincolnarchives Digital Project is in the process of digitizing all federal records created during the Abraham Lincoln administation. Every document dated between March 4, 1861-April 15, 1865 is being scanned, and transcribed. Once completed, the millions of documents, including Civil War records, will be fully searchable. These documents are being scanned at 600 dpi in color. There is no microfilm on this website. Every document, photograph, newspaper, map, etc, has been scanned from the original document.

For those who cannot afford to come to Washington, D.C. you will now have access to these records from the comfort of home.
Individual subscriptions are $15 per month or $150/yr.
